A Metric is any sort of counter used to track values that can be incremented (or decremented) by your Members over time.
A common example used in many loyalty programs are "Points" that can be accrued through purchases or other activities, and could optionally be linked to different Tiers within a Tier Scheme, allowing a consumer to progress to higher levels to unlock additional discounts or other benefits. A Metric can also be used to respresent more abstract concepts like "miles" for an airline.
The Metrics screen allows you to create, view, and manage the different Metrics in your program.
Note: If you have multiple Metrics defined in your account, one Metric is identified as the "primary" Metric. See Deployments for more information on how to identify which Metric in your account is the primary Metric.
Broadly speaking, Metrics may be considered to be of the following types:
Implicit: Metrics that are implicity part of transactions, such as number of purchases or amount spent. These Metrics may not be visible to Members, but they can still be useful to track for segmentation purposes.
Earned: A Member's transactions earn a number of Metrics based on Calculation Rules (also known as "Earn Rules").
Derived: Metrics derived from other Metrics in conjunction with other Attributes. For example, if sales transactions include location information, then from a "Dollar Spend" Metric, you could derive a "Dollar Spend Online" Metric.
The following concepts can be applied to a Metric.
Aggregated Over Time: A Metric’s aggregated value over a period of time (such as last 'n' days, last 'n' months, last year, lifetime) can be used for various calculations. For example, you could extend an Offer to Members who spend a certain number of dollars over the last 60 days.
Redeemable: A redeemable Metric can be used by a Member as currency in exchange for rewards. For redeemable Metrics, the notion of current vs. earned applies. The current Metric value is a Member's balance after deducting any redemptions, and reflects what the Member has available to spend on further redemptions. The earned Metric value reflects their total accrued balance before deducting any redemptions, and may be used in other rules, such as determining their Tier level within a Tier Scheme.
Accrual: Calculaiton Rules determine how Metrics are calculated based on Member transactions. A Metric may be directly mapped to a value in the transaction. For example, spend $100 and earn 10 Points. Metrics may also be calculated based on other Attributes, such as a Member's Tier level, or a special Offer. In addition, different products could accrue Metrics at different rates, or perhaps some products are excluded entirely from earning Metrics. For example, a grocery store loyalty program may not allow Members to accrue Points for purchasing alcohoic beverages.
Expire: Redeemable Metrics can be configured with an expiration. For example, a Member's Points could expire if there is no purchase activity in 18 months. On expiration, the current Metric value is set to 0 through an appropriate debit; the earned Metric value and other aggregated or derived values continue to be available in the system.
Visibility: From a Member usability perspective, Metrics should be visible to a Member when they have an impact on the Member's participation in the loyalty program, such as Metrics they can redeem, or Metrics that impact their attainment of a Tier level or other rewards. You may also define other Metrics not visible to Members that you use for other purposes. For example, you could define a Metric to track store visits, and then use that value for targeting and messaging purposes.
Pooled: Optionally, clients can organize Members into a Group. If a Metric is pooled, then the platform will sum together Metric values for all invidiuals within the Group.
To access the Metrics screen, select Definitions from the Main Navigation Menu, then select Metrics > Metrics from the Sub-Category menu.
The Metrics screen provides the following features:
SearchThe search feature allows you to search for a specified text string anywhere within the following Metric fields: Name, Internal Name, Type, or Code.
SortThe "Sort" drop-down menu allows you to sort the Metrics on a variety of different fields. To sort the list of Metrics, select the desired sort option from this menu.
